The 19th. century church appears to be at least the fourth church on the site stretching back to a known origin of 1186 though there are very strong suggestions there was a chapel here in the 4th. century dedicated to St. Gordiani (or Gorgon) a martyred Roman soldier who suffered during Diocletian's persecution of Christians. Diocletian was Emperor of the Roman Empire from 284 to 305AD. The apse situated on the eastern gable may have been part of the chancel but now appears to form the vestry.
