For anyone interested in the history of the Cardiganshire Militia during the Napoleonic Wars after 1803 a number of references to soldiers can be seen in the registers of Walmer parish church, now in the Canterbury Cathedral Archives. They seem to have been stationed there from 1807 to 1811. One of the earliest references is to the marriage of a couple of whom the groom, a soldier of the militia, is described as from Sandown Castle. Sandown is in the Isle of Wight. It is known the militia were stationed in the Isle of Wight from 1804 but this reference suggests a further location for a source of names. The Isle of Wight registers are in the Hampshire Record Office at Winchester. (Contributed by Adrian Lewis Sept 2010).
