  • 1839 October 14 Baptist; a chapel called Carmel situated at Newbridge in the parish of Llanwonno; James RICHARDS of Newbridge aforesaid, Baptist Minister, Thomas GIBBON, John WILLIAMS (8)
  • The Baptists in Pontypridd; The Baptists were the first to hold regular religious services in the place. [i.e. Pontypridd] About 1808 a young man names ADAM ROWLAND---settled in Pontypridd. At same time 2 other families moved into neighbourhood from Merthyr - those of WILLIAM GRIFFITHS and WM JAMES. Meetings were first held in open air and afterwards rented a room over the brew house of the old 'White Horse' now know as the Old Malsters at the east end of the Old Bridge. Services cont'd there until 'Little Carmel' was built and on Sunday Dec 23rd 1810 they left the old meeting room and held their first service in Carmel. Carmel was the first place erected in Pontypridd. The chapel was built in 1833. The Welsh Baptists continued to worship here until 1861 when they left the old temple that must have been dear to many of them, for the Tabernacle, the fine and substantial edifice by the Old Bridge, where they still continue to worship.

  • "By 1810, Carmel Chapel, the first Baptist chapel in Pontypridd, Glamorgan, was built, at the Mill Street end of Graigwen Hill. By 1861, the Carmel was too small for the congregation and Tabernacl Chapel was built; from 1867, the Carmel became an English-language chapel. Three chapels were built, on the same site, and the last was demolished in about 1970. The graveyard was the burial place of Evan James (1809-1875) and his son James James (1832-1902), who wrote the words and music of 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau', the Welsh national anthem. Evan James was re-interred in Ynysangharad Park, Pontypridd. The other burials were removed from the graveyard in Graigwen Road in 1979, and re-interred in Glyn Taff Crematorium, Pontypridd. Plas Carmel flats were built on the site."

      A leading member of the congregation and deacon at Bethel was George Davies (1793-1880), son of the above-mentioned William and Ann Davies. George Davies was the driving force behind the construction of a new, larger, chapel, close to the site of the original one, which was completed in 1876.
      The new chapel has a foundation stone whose inscription reads:
      "This Memorial Stone was laid by George Davies Esq., Tynewydd, August 1st 1876"
